You’ve done your best, you’ve put in the sweat equity and you can stand back and look at your project and say

Huh, I pictured “my best” being better in my mind.

It’s not square, but honestly, that’s a 2 part combo punch from a really unlevel floor and an abrasive chop say that...um...sucks. It’s pretty good, not great, but pretty good. About half the welds look like they are supposed to and the rest are all penetrating at least.  I think its about as good as I can do without better tools.

It’s 2 inch .120 wall square tube all around, I got a good deal on stee l (20 feet for $34)

It will be the legs for this table.

It’s a 6-foot diameter spool table stained in mahogany with 6 layers of marine spare urethane.

Looks pretty damned good to me. A little grinder action and some paint and it will be perfect.

I really like that mix of industrial / natural wood aesthetic. Only Oppos would even know what to look for in the welds. No one else is going to see the welds - especially under the table.

“I think its about as good as I can do without better tools.” - Don’t be offended but I had a chuckle at the craftsman blaming his tools. I use the same reasoning as an excuse to buy more tools.

Nice job. Many times, it’s better to get it done than to be perfect.

Yeah, I don’t tend to like to blame my tools...but I really don’t have a lot of precision tools.  I’m not even sure my square is square. This was a lot of hand work with a grinder to bring cuts back to square.

I’ll grind and flap wheel, but I think I will leave it raw and spar it.

Now that you’ve done this table, you’ve proven that you need more tools.

A neighbor used clear epoxy to protect his wood outdoor table. I t now looks like a plastic table.  I like the varnish idea better.

I really debated heavily on the finish, I’ve wanted one of these for a while. The thing that I kept coming back to was that heavy/deep look of marine wood. That “put another coat on while we’re in port” look. I love it. I think this hits the mark, plus its UV stable so it wont look like crap in a few years outside.

Looks good. Don't be afraid to add a little more heat to your welds next time. And if you are looking for a cheap way to make better cuts, you can always get a HF portaband and do it that way. I like the results much better than a chop saw.

Max heat setting on my 110V welder. This one is a litte goobery because the wire speed was up too high, most look better than that one.
